The movie Spare Parts raises the awareness of a highly applicable debate, immigration: what the government should do with the approximately eleven million illegal immigrants that are located inside the border of America. However, Spare Parts especially highlights «the Dreamers» in the movie which are illegally smuggled immigrants who arrived in America as children. They came from another country and were brought by their parents who grew up as Americans.

The movie consists of four main characters who are undocumented Latino students from Cayden Hayden High school. Each of them is continuously at risk of deportation and are a perfect example of the dreamers. Undocumented immigrants face deportation by the reason that they do not have the residence papers. ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is responsible for enforcing the immigration laws of the United States by arresting, detaining and deporting unauthorized immigrants in the country. In order to » promote homeland security and public safety through the criminal and civil enforcement of federal laws». Since the transition from Obama Admiration to Trump Admiration has the number of arrested undocumented immigrants without criminal records increased from 1,703 monthly to 4,143.  This radical change is due to President Donald Trump’ s instruction to the ICE to arrest any undocumented immigrant its agents encountered, which has led to a sharp increase.

The setting in the movie takes place before former President Barack Obama’s policy of Deferred Action for the Childhood Arrivals (DACA).  DACA was established by Obama Admiration in 2012 and was an American immigration policy that allowed some specific illegal immigrants, Dreamers to receive a renewable two years period exposure from deportation.  The programs let the Dreamers remained in America legally and give them an opportunity to get an education, enrol college, get a job and even build a business. Hence, build a life for themselves.

Since Donald Trump became President, have DACA being rescinded on June 25, 2017, by Trump Admiration. As a result, the Dreamers will no longer have the protection of DACA and risk being sent back to their home country by ICE, local communities will struggle, more families will have financial problems, and not at least affect the industries including food service and sales. However, according to the American newspaper CNBC, the court has ordered the Trump Admiration to fully reinstate DACA program and accept new applications to the program.

  1. Wow, an impressive article about the background of the Dreamers, the difference between the politics of Obama and Trump. You could perhaps have mentioned something about the movie and how they solved the technical aspect of the robot, but what you wrote was very interesting.
